The Reality of Housing Instability
Housing instability in the Black Hills impacts working families, single parents, and households with young children. Without stable housing, children face increased risks, including poor academic outcomes, higher involvement with the legal system, elevated truancy, decreased physical and emotional wellbeing, and a greater likelihood of suicide attempts and chronic homelessness as adults.

Serving the Hidden Homeless
Foundations for Families of the Black Hills serves families with minor-age children experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, including many who are part of the “hidden homeless.” These families may be staying in overcrowded homes, living in hotels or motels when finances allow, or residing in vehicles. This also includes single fathers, and mothers with male children ages 12–18, who may be unable to access traditional shelters due to age or gender restrictions, often forcing a choice between family separation and shelter.
